Serious question, did anyone else flip on the "just move out faster" advice after their first lease?
I used to roll my eyes at people saying you should always fight a landlord's bogus $250 cleaning fee, but after getting my full deposit back in 3 weeks just by sending a dated photo album, I'm kinda converted. What's the one piece of pushback that actually worked for you?
Man, the thing that saved me was a move-in checklist I made the landlord sign. Took maybe ten minutes when I got the keys, walked room to room and wrote down every scratch and stain, then had him initial it. Two years later he tried to keep my deposit for "wall damage" that was already there on day one, and I just sent him a scan of that sheet. Got the whole thing back in a week. The signed part is what mattered, because a list you made alone is just your word against theirs. Cheap lesson to learn early.
