Almost got called out on a project because I trusted a viral YouTube framing tip

I watched this video from a guy with 500k subscribers saying you can skip every other stud when hanging cabinets if you use those big toggle bolts. Tried it on a kitchen reno in Austin last month and three days later the whole thing sagged an inch. Had to tear it out and redo it with proper blocking, cost me an extra $200 in materials and a full Saturday. Anyone else ever follow a big creator's advice and regret it immediately?

Big YouTube creators have mastered the art of looking confident while giving bad advice. They film once, edit out all their mistakes, and move on. Meanwhile we're stuck fixing the real world results. I've noticed this same pattern everywhere not just with tools. People trust anyone with a big following and skip the boring stuff like checking with an actual pro or reading the manual. Your toggle bolt trick probably worked fine in that guy's perfectly straight brand new wall, but real houses settle and shift over time. The whole thing is backwards now too since anyone can sound smart with good lighting and a catchy thumbnail. Next time I'm going back to asking my old timer neighbor before listening to some influencer.

Preach. That toggle bolt in an old house is a nightmare waiting to happen.

And that's really the core of it right there. People forget that a wall in a 1920s house with plaster and lath is a completely different animal than a wall from 2020 with standard drywall. One bad toggle bolt placement in old plaster and you're not just fixing a hole, you're dealing with a crack that runs three feet down the wall. It's like the whole influencer DIY scene aims for a one size fits all solution but houses are anything but that. The confidence they project is just a front for the fact that they've never faced the reality of a ceiling fan crashing down at 2am because somebody watched a five minute video.
