Hit 10,000 unread emails last week and realized I'm a digital hoarder

I accidentally let my inbox get to 10,247 unread messages after ignoring it for about 8 months. Most of it was newsletters I signed up for once and spam from old shopping accounts. Took me 3 hours of mass deleting to get back to zero, and now I set a rule to bin anything from addresses I haven't opened in 90 days. Anyone else ever hit a crazy email count like that and just feel overwhelmed?

My record was 12,000 after a year of ignoring everything, and I still have nightmares about that cleanup day. You get that feeling of dread every time you open the app, but the search trick really is a lifesaver for those random receipts.

nah i gotta push back a little here. i mean, folders and rules are fine but what's the actual panic about? i've got like 15k unread in my gmail right now and it's basically just a filing system at this point. if something actually matters someone will email me again or text me or call me about it. the 90 day auto-delete thing sounds good until you need to dig up a receipt or an invoice from 8 months ago and it's just gone. i'd rather have a messy inbox i can search through than lose stuff i might need later for warranty claims or tax stuff or whatever.

OMG "filing system" is exactly what I call my inbox too. I nodded so hard at the part about receipts and invoices. Last year I had to dig up a warranty claim for a dishwasher that broke 14 months after I bought it. If that email had auto-deleted after 90 days I would have been out like $400. Plus I'm always the person who needs to screenshot an old confirmation email to prove I paid for something. Let the messy inbox live, search is powerful enough now to find anything in seconds anyway.
