Hit 50,000 miles on my truck yesterday and it made me question the whole "drive it till it dies" mindset

I see people online all the time saying you should run a vehicle into the ground before upgrading, but at 50k miles my truck is barely broken in and still worth decent money to sell. The counter argument is that selling early means you eat depreciation, but is it really smart to keep a truck until 200k miles just to avoid a car payment? I'm curious how you guys decide when a vehicle has given you enough value.

It's kind of like that "use it up, wear it out" mindset people apply to everything.

That whole "use it up wear it out" thing only works if what you're using isn't literally falling apart after a year though. I mean @wendy_lee48, what's the cutoff between being thrifty and just putting up with junk that doesn't work right anymore? Like with my old blender the motor was clearly dying and I kept thinking "one more use" until it literally smoked out my kitchen.

Honestly that's exactly what happened with my old leaf blower. I kept patching it back together for two seasons, telling myself it was fine, then one morning it just seized up mid-use and the whole thing was beyond repair. Ngl I think there's a fine line between being smart with your money and just being stubborn about replacing something that's clearly done. With my landscaping gear I've learned the hard way that waiting too long just costs more in the long run, especially when you're relying on it for work. Same thing applies to blenders or anything else really - if you're having to fight it every time you use it, that's your sign. Sometimes being thrifty actually means knowing when to cut your losses and get something that works right.
