Rant: my cousin told me that video about the '5 second rule' was fake science, so I read the actual study he linked
Last month my cousin sent me a YouTube comment thread claiming the 5 second rule was made up by Big Floor or something, and he kept quoting a guy on there who called it fake science. So I actually clicked the study the guy linked, and it said dropping food on a wet floor transfers way more bacteria than a dry one, which is the opposite of what the whole comment section was saying. The top comment had over 2,000 likes and started with 'studies show,' but the study they linked was about carpet, not tile, and it was from 2006. It took me 10 minutes to find that out, and now my cousin won't text me back. Does anyone else have a relative who sends them comment sections as proof?
Wait, so the study was about carpet the whole time and nobody in that thread actually read past the title? That part kills me, because carpet is its own weird case since it traps stuff in the fibers, so using it to say anything about a kitchen floor is just wrong. Did you ever figure out what the dry floor vs wet floor thing even means for real life, like does a wet floor actually make the transfer worse or does it depend on how long the food sits there? I keep seeing people throw around the 5 second rule like it's settled science when even the real studies seem to disagree with each other depending on the surface. Also your cousin going quiet after you showed him the actual study is such a classic move, it's way easier to send a comment thread than to admit you got played by a top comment.
