Saw a guy claim you can fix a cracked phone screen with toothpaste and a heat gun
I was scrolling YouTube shorts last night and some dude with 50k followers actually posted a tutorial saying toothpaste and a heat gun can fix spiderweb cracks on an iPhone screen. He had a whole demo where he rubbed Colgate on a cracked phone, hit it with a heat gun for a minute, and claimed it "blends the glass back together." I've fixed a few screens myself and I know thermal shock can literally shatter the digitizer worse, so this felt dangerous to put out there. Has anyone else run into a repair tip online that could actually wreck someone's phone if they tried it?

Blends the glass back together" is just nonsense, heat guns crack screens worse.

Oh man, tell me about it. I had a friend who tried that heat gun trick on a cracked tablet screen. She thought she was being clever and watched some YouTube tutorial or whatever. Within like 30 seconds, the crack spiderwebbed clear across the whole screen and some of the plastic frame started warping. It was honestly kinda horrifying to watch. She ended up having to buy a whole new tablet anyway, so it just wasted her time and money. I don't get why people keep trying to fix broken screens with household tools like that. Seems like a recipe for making an expensive mistake worse every single time.
