I fix HVAC units for a living and saw this take last month from some business account in San Diego. The guy's whole point was that real pros only show up in wrapped trucks with a fleet number, and anyone rolling up in a plain white van is a scam. Never mind that I bought my own van outright in 2021, paid it off in 14 months, and my customers text me back because I answer the phone myself. I've done 60 plus jobs this year out of that van and not one person asked what it looked like. So what's the worst equipment or setup take you've seen get passed around like it's gospel?
The "real pros only show up in wrapped trucks with a fleet number" line is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, and honestly it is not crazy on its face. A wrap and a fleet number mean somebody dropped real money and has a company behind them, so if the job goes bad there is a business to go after. My cousin got burned by a guy in a plain van who took a deposit and vanished, and good luck finding him, the van was gone and so was the phone number. Small shops can be great, but the branding is a quick shortcut for customers who have no other way to tell who is legit. The part the tweet gets wrong is treating it like a rule instead of a clue, because a fancy truck does not mean the work is good either, I have seen fleet guys upsell people into stuff they did not need.
