Shoutout to that random Twitter thread comparing concert etiquette between 2018 and 2025
I saw this thread yesterday that broke down how crowds at shows have changed. The person said in 2018 maybe 2 out of 10 people had phones out during a set, but now it's like 8 out of 10. They blamed the rise of TikTok culture and people wanting clips for social media instead of just vibing. The difference was wild to see laid out with actual video examples from the same venue, the Ryman in Nashville. Anyone else notice this at shows you've been to recently or am I just going to the wrong gigs?

The "TikTok culture" thing is so real, I saw a band I loved last month and barely anyone watched the actual show.

I get what you're saying about the TikTok thing but I actually see it a LITTLE different. I go to a lot of shows at the Viper Room in LA and yeah phones are out more but I feel like people are still watching the show, just also recording key parts. Like last week I saw this punk band and everyone had their phones up for the big chorus drop but then put them down and went NUTS in the pit right after. I think the 2018 vs 2025 comparison leaves out that people back then were ALSO on their phones a lot, just taking grainy photos instead of video. The real change for me is that now people actually know when to record and when to participate, at least at the shows I go to.
