That 'life hack' video about washing dishes with ketchup ruined my entire sink
Honestly, I tried that viral TikTok hack where you use ketchup to clean tarnished copper pots. I was in my kitchen last Tuesday, squeezed half a bottle of Heinz onto my grandma's old saucepan, left it for 10 minutes like they said. The ketchup actually ate through the seasoning on the pan and left this weird sticky residue that took me 20 minutes to scrub off. Has anyone else fallen for one of those cleaning hacks that turned out to be total garbage?

Yeah I used to be one of those people who thought ketchup was some kind of miracle cleaner, I had it in my head that it was a cheap fix for anything tarnished. Then I tried it on an old brass lamp base and the stuff just smeared everywhere, it took half an hour and three rounds of soap to get the film off. @nathankim is probably right that the timing matters but honestly if you have to nail a 2 minute window for it to work then it's not really a good hack, it's just a sticky mess waiting to happen. I'd rather just use proper polish and not have to worry about ruining something.

3 tablespoons of white vinegar and a drop of dish soap would have done the same thing but way faster. I mean, I get why people hate on the ketchup thing but honestly, you probably just left it on too long or used the wrong kind of pan for it. Ketchup is basically vinegar and tomato paste, so yeah, it's gonna strip stuff if you let it sit. Idk, maybe it's just me but I've used ketchup to clean tarnished brass handles on my old cabinet and it worked perfectly after like 2 minutes. People just need to pay attention to the actual science of what they're doing instead of blaming the hack.
