TIL I was using oatmeal packets wrong for 30 years
Always dumped the packet in a bowl and added boiling water. Stirred it for 2 minutes. Got that weird slimy film on top. My buddy in Chicago told me to dump the oatmeal in the water while it's still cold. Bring to a boil together. Night and day difference. No film, actually creamy. 30 years of bad oatmeal. Anyone else have a kitchen habit they recently found out was backwards?

I actually just heard about this on a cooking show (of all places, I was half asleep flipping channels). They said the slimy film is from the starches releasing too fast with the boiling water shock. Been doing your buddy's method for a week now and yeah, it's way better. My wife even noticed I wasn't scraping that weird skin off the top anymore.

That cold water start trick is honestly life changing stuff right there.
