Pro tip: Those 2am Cheers reruns on channel 41 are edited down by 4 minutes and I only just caught it
So I got hooked on the late night Cheers block on channel 41 over the winter and started recording them on my old DVR to watch at breakfast. Last Tuesday I popped in a season 3 disc from the library and the same episode ran almost 4 minutes longer than what channel 41 airs. Turns out the station cuts scenes to squeeze in more ad breaks, so whole bits like Coach's little speeches just vanish from the rerun version. I went back and compared 6 episodes side by side and every single one was shortened. Now I wonder how much of the show I actually know from those chopped up airings. Does anyone else check the runtime when a comfort show feels weirdly jumpy, or am I the only one timing sitcoms with a stopwatch?
