My sourdough starter actually died on me after 3 years of feeding it

I went on vacation for 10 days last month and left it in the fridge with a tight lid on by accident - came back to green mold on top. Has anyone else lost a starter they had for years and just gave up on making a new one?

Ngl that green mold is brutal, I lost a 5-year-old starter when my roommate put orange juice in it thinking it was water. Can't bring myself to start over either, kinda feels like burying a pet.

Is it just me or does every hobby eventually turn into some weird emotional commitment you never signed up for? You're out here mourning a flour and water mixture like it's a goldfish.

Feels like burying a pet" - that's exactly it. A 5 year starter has this weird emotional weight to it. You've fed it so long it's basically a family member.
