Tried a new sourdough recipe from a library book last month and my loaf came out flat as a pancake. What did I miss?

Wait, a library book? Those things can be decades old. I grabbed one once for banana bread and it called for like, a quarter cup of shortening. No wonder it was a brick. Did your recipe have weird old-timey instructions, like telling you to proof it in a "warm place" without saying what temp? That's a total trap.

Totally feel that, @shanec61 is onto something with the old book thing. Maybe your starter was just dead and the recipe forgot to mention it. Better luck next time, maybe just google a video instead.

Seriously, old recipes are a minefield. My grandma's handwritten cookie card says "a cup of flour" but her cup was literally a teacup, not a measuring cup. How are you supposed to know that? Did your book at least have pictures, or was it just walls of text?
