Tried to make a birthday cake for my nephew last week and the frosting turned a truly alarming shade of green.

Oh man, what kind of cocoa were you using - natural or Dutch-process? Did you follow a specific recipe and was it definitely calling for the right kind?

Alarming shade of green" is my specialty. My last attempt at red velvet looked like something you'd find growing in a shady pond. I swear I followed the recipe, but the cake had this weird grey-green aura. My family still asks if it was a Halloween cake, and his birthday is in July.

Maybe your cocoa powder was alkaline?

Honestly that's the cocoa reacting with the baking soda. Try using a little less soda or a different brand of cocoa next time.
