Vent: My sourdough starter refused to get bubbly for a month
I followed a recipe from a book and kept my starter jar in the kitchen, feeding it daily. After three weeks with zero bubbles, I was ready to give up. The fix was moving it to the top of my water heater, a warmer spot, and it finally doubled in size within two days. Has anyone else had a starter that just would not activate in a normal room temperature spot?

Why mess with a good thing though? My starter has always been fine on the counter. Maybe some kitchens are just too cold.

My old apartment in Chicago had a drafty kitchen that killed two starters. The water heater trick was the only thing that worked.

Actually the water heater trick is way too much work. You have to keep checking the temperature and it wastes energy. Robert_ross95 has the right idea with the fridge top. It's warm and steady up there. My starter lives on my fridge year round and it never fails. People overcomplicate this stuff.
