A client's kid in Portland asked me why I always start with the clippers, not the scissors, and honestly it stopped me cold.

Remember my grandpa showing me how to sharpen a pocket knife on a whetstone... he said you always start with the coarse grit to set the edge, the fine stuff just polishes it. I guess clippers are like that coarse grit, they get the shape right so the scissors can do the detail work. That kid's question would have stumped me too, makes you realize how much of your job is just muscle memory.

My muscle memory is mostly for finding the TV remote.

That muscle memory thing is so true. What's the most basic task in your job that you could do blindfolded now?

So your grandpa was basically a ninja barber?
