A kid at the park in Fresno showed me a better way to hold clippers

I was cutting my nephew's hair at the local park last month, just a quick shape-up. This teenager walked by, stopped for a second, and said, 'Hey mister, you're gonna get a cleaner line if you hold it like this.' He showed me how to rest the back of the clipper body against my palm instead of gripping the sides, which gives way more control on the hard angles around the ear. I've been cutting for 8 years and never thought of that. Tried it on my next three clients and the fades were noticeably sharper. Has anyone else picked up a random tip from a totally unexpected person?

Forget the risk @the_nancy, that kid is a GENIUS.

That's actually a pretty risky move taking unsolicited advice from a stranger. You could have messed up a client's haircut real bad trying something new on the fly. Sometimes the old way you know is safer than a random tip.

Actually the kid's advice makes sense from a physics standpoint. Holding the clipper against your palm gives you a pivot point, so your whole arm moves instead of just your wrist. That's why barbers do it for straight lines. It's not really a risky change, just a better grip.
