Had a dad bring his son in for his first real haircut last month and the kid started crying when I reached for the clippers

Oh wow, I bet nobody's thought about this but maybe the kid wasn't scared of the clippers themselves but the sound they make right next to their ears. Babies and toddlers have super sensitive hearing, way more than adults. That buzzing noise close to their head can actually hurt or just feel really intense and scary. Plus little ones don't understand that it's not going to hurt them, they just know something loud is coming near their face and ears. I've seen kids totally fine with scissors but absolutely lose it with clippers because of that sound and vibration.

Yeah, you're spot on about the sound thing. What worked for us was letting my nephew hold the clippers while they were off so he could feel the weight and see it wasn't a monster. Then we'd turn them on in another room first so he got used to the noise from a distance before ever bringing them near his head.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like people overthink this stuff sometimes. Kids get scared of random things all the time and usually they just get over it after a couple tries. Idk if we need to make it into this whole scientific thing about sensitive hearing and pain and all that. Sometimes a kid just doesn't like the buzzing noise and that's really all there is to it. It's not like a haircut is some kind of traumatic event for most kids.
