Hitting the road showed me how barber shops keep their heart

A few years ago, I packed my bag and took a slow trip up the coast, popping into barber shops from busy cities to quiet beach towns. It was cool to see how the setup changed but the core feel stayed the same. In one spot, they had vintage chairs and offered full shaves with a steady hand, while another place was all about sharp line-ups and loud music. I still use a scalp massage move I saw from a guy in a shop near the pier. What got me was how every barber had time to chat about local life or give advice, no rush. These days, with apps and quick cuts, that personal touch can get lost. I think about those trips when I want to remember why this job is about more than hair. Maybe plan your own little journey to see how other shops do it.

Try hitting shops on Tuesday afternoons. Slower hours mean barbers actually have time for that kind of talk, like @jades11’s Seattle tie lesson. You get the real local tips when they aren’t staring down a full booking.

Oh, that's the real pro tip right there. My barber just asks if I want the same thing every time, so I'm clearly going on the wrong day. Guess I need to switch to Tuesdays.

My barber trips just remind me I can't cut my own bangs.
