Just realized I've been cutting the neckline wrong on fades for 3 years
Had a regular in my chair yesterday who's been coming to me since I started at the shop in Dayton, and he mentioned his last cut from another guy lasted almost a week longer than mine does. That got me thinking so I watched a bunch of my old progress pics, and yeah, I've been cutting the neckline straight across with the clipper instead of following the natural curve. My old mentor used to tell us to "trace the hairline, not fight it" but I guess it never clicked until now. Spent about 90 minutes last night practicing on a mannequin head and the difference is night and day. Any of you guys had a technique you did wrong for ages before something random made it click?
Three years of cutting necklines straight across is wild, that guy must have been walking around looking like his barber used a ruler and a grudge. At least you caught it now instead of year five, and a week of extra wear is no small thing when dudes are paying for a fresh fade every couple weeks. Trace the hairline, not fight it is a solid rule, and it works for way more than just necklines.
