My uncle swore by thinning shears for blending, and I finally tried it

He's been cutting hair in Cincinnati for thirty years and told me to ditch the clipper-over-comb for certain fades. I was stubborn and thought it was a crutch for poor technique. Tried it on a client's tight curl pattern last week, and the blend was smoother in half the time. Anyone else have a tool they resisted that actually worked better?

My buddy runs a shop and fought against using a straight razor for finishing. He said it was just for old-school barbers. A client with fine, wispy hair kept getting these harsh lines no matter how he scissor-over-combed. He finally tried the razor to soften everything up and it just melted the lines away. He said it was the only thing that worked on that hair type without taking off too much length. Totally changed his mind on having it in his kit.

Man, I was the same way with texturizing shears for years. Thought they were just for removing bulk on longer hair. Then I had this guy with super thick, straight hair who wanted a choppy, piecey look. Scissors just weren't getting it right. Finally grabbed the texturizers and it broke up the weight perfectly, gave it that separation he wanted without making it look thin. Felt like a total game-changer for that specific type of hair.

Yeah, it's wild how they can save a cut that's just not working...
