Overheard a customer say barbers don't need math and it got me thinking

I was clipping this guy in my chair last Tuesday and he goes "man you're lucky you don't have to deal with numbers like my accountant job." I almost stopped mid cut. I calculate fade transitions in my head every single day. Blend distances, section angles, even how many comb lengths I need for a consistent taper. Has any other barber noticed how much quick math we actually do without thinking?

It's funny how people think math has to look like textbooks and blackboards. Every fade is basically a gradient calculation, even if you're just going by feel. I've seen young barbers measure crown angles with their eyes and adjust blade depths on the fly without writing a single number down. The accountant probably balances spreadsheets, but you're doing applied geometry with scissors and a head of hair. We just call it "the blend" instead of "proportional distribution.

Haha, that's too real. I tried explaining my haircut technique to a friend once and she said I was doing "calculus with clippers." Meanwhile I can't balance my checkbook to save my life, but somehow I can shade and texture without even thinking. It's like our brains just flip a switch the moment we pick up the shears.

Man this guy I know who cuts hair at a shop across town told me he figured out his own system for fading without even realizing it was math. He measures the distance between the guard steps by counting comb teeth against the scalp. Said he felt like a dummy when his buddy who teaches high school math pointed out he was basically doing ratios every cut. Do you think most barbers just don't call it math so they overlook it?
