Razor burn on a fresh fade, client blamed my blades, not his routine

I switched to a milder pre-shave oil last Tuesday and the same kid who never breaks out suddenly had red bumps all down his neckline. Turns out his aftershave had alcohol in it, which I never thought to check before. Do you guys ask clients what they use after the chair, or is that overstepping?

Blamed my blades" caught my eye, man. That's the part that gets me. You switched products, that's on you for not checking his aftershave, but the real issue is you didn't ask. I always ask what they use at home, straight up. It's not overstepping, it's part of the job. A client who gets a reaction will blame you every time, no matter if it's their routine. Save yourself the headache and add it to your standard questions. You cant fix a problem you don't know exists. One minute of asking saves you a bad review later.

and honestly it's the same everywhere, like when you hire a plumber and they don't ask what pipes you have, or when you get a haircut and they don't ask about your cowlick. people just assume the other person knows their own stuff and then get mad when something goes wrong. i mean, my sister got a facial once and didn't tell the esthetician about her retinol use, and she blamed the whole place for her peeling skin. it's like we're all walking around with this hidden info and expecting mind readers, but one simple question could save everyone the drama.
