Switched from clipper-over-comb to freehand shearing 6 months ago
Tbh I used to rely on clipper-over-comb for every fade transition, but after messing up a client's crown last April I forced myself to learn freehand. Has anyone else found it gives a way smoother blend once you get the hang of it?

Ugh YES thank you! Freehand shearing is SO much better once you push through the shaky phase. Like @phoenix_martin40 your buddy totally gets it. I did the same thing after a total disaster with a wedding party last summer. The clipper over comb just gives this heavy line that freehand completely avoids. It took me a solid four months before I stopped second guessing every stroke on the parietal ridge. Now I actually look forward to tricky fades instead of dreading them. Once you trust your eye over the guard, there's no going back.

Oh, I had a buddy who swore by clipper-over-comb for years until he butchered a kid's haircut right before prom pictures. He had to switch to freehand out of desperation, and now he says he'd never go back because the blends come out way softer. It took him a good three months to stop shaking through the curve, but he says it's worth the rough start.
