TIL I was wrong about using a straight razor for every skin fade
For years I insisted a straight razor was the only way to get a clean line, even on sensitive skin. Last week a client in Portland with really bad razor burn convinced me to try a guarded trimmer set at a zero gap instead. I used my Andis T-Outliner, adjusted it carefully, and the result was just as sharp with zero irritation. Has anyone else made this switch for clients with sensitive skin?

Totally makes sense. I switched to a zero-gapped trimmer for my first pass on sensitive areas. It gets the same clean line without the drama.

Gotta disagree with you guys, I've been zero-gapping for years now and it's honestly fine once you get the hang of it. Young.michael's friend probably just rushed through it - you take your time and it's way smoother than a razor.

My buddy Dave tried that zero-gap trick last summer. He ended up with a nasty cut that looked way worse than any razor burn, which kind of proves @the_sean's point about avoiding drama. I'll stick with my guard on.

Zero gap on a trimmer for sensitive areas sounds like a recipe for disaster. That is basically a straight razor with extra steps. One wrong move and you are in the emergency room explaining a very awkward injury. The whole point of a guard is to prevent that exact kind of drama.
