Took me 3 years to realize I was holding my shears wrong

Was at a show in Dallas last month and this old school barber just watched me cut for a minute. He said 'man your thumb is killing your wrist' and showed me how to loosen my grip. I thought I had it down but turns out I was pinching the tension the whole time. Been cutting smoother ever since. Anyone else have a basic habit they had to unlearn?

Did you ever notice how your other hand was positioned too? I had a barber tell me I was holding the comb way too tight with my left hand, making my whole arm cramp up by the end of a long day. Loosening both hands changed everything for me, almost like my body finally stopped fighting the scissors.

Nah, I actually kinda disagree. Holding the comb tight gives me way more control and precision, especially when I'm doing detailed work around the ears or neckline. I've tried the whole relaxed grip thing and ended up with a slippery comb and choppy lines, so I'll take a cramped arm over a bad haircut any day.

Did you try switching to a smaller comb to keep control without white-knuckling it?
