Update: That weird neckline trick from a 90s barber mag actually works

I had a regular in the chair yesterday with a super tricky cowlick right at his hairline, and the usual clipper-over-comb wasn't doing it. I remembered this old tip from a 'Barber Journal' I found in a box, about using thinning shears vertically on the very last pass. Tried it, and it blended that spot perfectly without taking any length off. Anyone still use thinning shears for finishing touches like that?

Yeah, that old school stuff is full of little fixes. I read a forum post once where a guy talked about using thinning shears on dry hair only for that final blend, never on wet hair. He said the wet hair clumps together and you get those uneven spots, but on dry hair you can see exactly what you're taking off. Makes sense when you think about it.

Ever see a barber try to fix a neckline with thinning shears and make it worse? My friend went to a new guy who did that, and it looked all choppy and uneven. He had to go somewhere else to get it cleaned up with a regular trim.

That's rough, really feel for your friend on that one.

That "old tip from a Barber Journal" reminds me of my uncle's shop, where he swore by using a straight razor for the final neckline pass.
