Comparison: My DIY mortar mix vs. the pre-mixed bags for shower floor
Last month I tried mixing my own dry pack from sand and cement for a shower pan. Thought I was saving money. After 3 failed attempts with crumbly edges I finally bought the $25 pre-mixed bags from Home Depot. The difference was night and day. Mix held together perfectly and troweled like butter. Has anyone else tried both and regretted the DIY route?

So you're telling me you paid 25 bucks for a bag of dirt and sand that's already been stirred together? And you think that's a win? Man, I tried the DIY route once too and ended up with a shower floor that looked like it had mange. That stuff from the store is basically cheating but worth every penny. At least now you get to spend your Saturday actually building something instead of sweeping up your failed experiments.

Thin set really helps with the sticky factor. Pro tip right there.

Respectfully disagree @charlies37, sometimes the mess IS the lesson.
