Custom shower niche vs prefab insert: I think prefab gets a bad rap

Watched a contractor rip out a custom tile niche because the waterproofing failed after 6 months, while my $45 prefab from Lowes has been dry for 3 years. Am I wrong for thinking prefab is the smarter move for most people?

Man, six months? That's rough... I'd be pissed if I paid for custom work and it failed that fast.

Read somewhere that prefab is actually LESS likely to fail cause there's less seams to mess up.
