Debate: Should you tear out old tile or tile right over it?

I ran into this old timer at a hardware store in Denver who swore tiling over existing tile is fine if you prep it right. But I've also had a contractor tell me it's just asking for moisture problems down the road. Which side do you land on?

...so you're telling me this old timer actually said tiling over old tile is fine? That's CRAZY to me. I mean, maybe if you're doing a tiny backsplash that never sees water, but for a bathroom floor or a shower wall? That's a disaster waiting to happen. The grout lines alone trap moisture and mold like you wouldn't believe, and no amount of "prep" is going to fix that sealed-in moisture pocket. Plus, what if the old tile starts to pop loose from the subfloor? Then your new tile comes right up with it. I've pulled up so many of those "just tile over it" jobs and found black mold underneath every time.
