Discovered an old shower valve behind the tile last Wednesday in my own house

I started demo on my 1980s bathroom in Phoenix and found the original shower valve was buried behind two layers of tile. Had to cut into the wall three times before I realized the previous owner just tiled over everything instead of removing the old gear. Anyone else run into lazy shortcuts like that from past remodels?

Previous owner just tiled over everything" - I get why you're annoyed but honestly sometimes that's a smart move if the old valve still works fine and you don't wanna mess with plumbing behind the wall. Not every shortcut is lazy, some are just practical.

@grace_knight19 tiling over an old valve makes zero sense since you can't shut the water off without ripping the tile out later.
