I finally learned why my shower drain was always slow after 3 years of blaming the pipes

I was watching a YouTube video from a plumbing channel last week and the guy mentioned that most shower drains are actually straight pipes leading to the trap, not curved like sinks. I thought my grout or hair was the issue, but he said the real problem is often a cheap plastic drain flange that catches stuff. I pulled mine out and sure enough, it had those little ridges that snag every bit of soap scum. Anyone else dealt with a flimsy drain flange that just collects gunk?

Hold on I gotta push back here. That cheap plastic flange is actually doing its JOB by catching hair and gunk before it goes further down your pipes and creates a hard clog you need a snake for. I just cleaned mine last week after two months and the buildup was nasty but it pulled right out. If you switch to something smooth, all that crud is just gonna slide right into the trap and then you're renting a drain cleaner every six months.

Bro fr you're totally right. That rough plastic catches all the nasty stuff before it even gets a chance to settle. I replaced mine with a metal one a few months back, thinking I was being smart, and I've literally had to snake the drain twice since then. That smooth surface just let everything slide right past and now it's stuck deeper down where its way harder to get out. Swapped back to the cheap plastic one last week and cleaned it out today, took like 30 seconds and zero mess. Mileslane is spot on, that thing is saving us from way worse clogs down the road.

Oh man, that's exactly what I was thinking when I read the original post. The rough plastic is like a net, it catches all the junk before it becomes a nightmare. Metal ones look nice but they just let the sludge slide right through into the pipes. You made the right call going back to the cheap one, seriously. Sometimes the simple stuff really is the best.
