Just spent 3 hours trying to get the shower drain slope right and it still pools water near the wall

I used a 2-foot level and a laser guide and thought I nailed it but after the mortar set I poured a bucket of water in and it just sits there in a 2-inch puddle, has anyone else fought with mortar bed slopes for way longer than they expected?

Used to think I was pretty good with mortar beds but this exact thing made me eat my words real fast. That little bit of water near the wall drove me crazy for two weekends straight before I finally tore it out and started fresh. Now I always flood test before the mortar fully sets, just a shallow test though so I don't mess everything up.

Funny how the smallest details always bite you hardest in everything, not just tiling.

Flood test before it sets, that's the move right there. I learned that one the hard way too (well, the expensive way since I wasted a whole bag of mortar). A quick water check at the 30 minute mark saves so much headache later.
