My 4 day bathroom gut got saved by a $3 shower valve socket from a Habitat ReStore in Boise
Last week I finally ripped out the 1968 pink tub and tile in our only bathroom, and I gave myself 4 days to get a working shower back for my family of 4. Day 2 went great until I hit the old Moen valve, and the retaining nut was so frozen that my channel locks just rounded it off. I ran to two big box stores in Boise and neither one had the right socket, so my wife was already looking up hotel prices for the night. On a whim I stopped at the Habitat ReStore on Orchard, and a retired plumber named Dale pulled a dusty 1 inch deep socket off a shelf and told me it was the only tool that would grab those old nuts without stripping them. It cost me $3, and it spun the nut off in maybe 10 seconds, which honestly felt like cheating after an hour of swearing. That one dumb socket turned a 4 day panic into a 4 day win, and we had hot water back by Sunday night. What random cheap tool has bailed out your remodel when nothing else would work?
