Question about the tile guy in Nashville who told me to skip the fancy spacers
I was picking up thinset at a store in Nashville last month and overheard a tile guy telling a newbie to ditch the wedge spacers and just use folded cardboard from the box. He said he's done 200 plus showers that way and never had a lip, and honestly watching him lay a 12x24 tile flat with that trick made me rethink my whole setup. I tried it on a small backsplash at home and the joints came out dead even, no wobble at all. The one catch is you have to pull the cardboard before the mortar sets or it sticks. Has anyone else tried this on a full shower wall, or am I about to learn a hard lesson on a bigger job?
Cardboard is free and the wedges cost money, but on a wet shower wall that cardboard soaks up water and swells. Pull it fast or you'll be chipping it out with a razor.
