Shoutout to the plumber who called me out on my cheap vanity lighting plan

I was bragging about saving $200 on some budget sconces from a big box store and he just laughed, then pointed to the shadows they cast on his own face. He said 'you'll hate the way those look every time you shave.' Has anyone else had a contractor save you from a bad call like that?

Electricians are the same way. Got chewed out for wanting cheap canless LED lights for the kitchen. Guy said they'd hum and die in two years. He was right. Those sconces would have been a nightmare. The contractors see the bad installs every day. Best money I ever spent was upgrading to decent fixtures after that talk. Saved way more in headache and rework costs later.

Nothing like paying extra to learn a lesson you could have gotten for free from a cranky electrician. Sounds like your guy saved you from the same fate as my buddy who insisted on bargain-bin brake pads and now has grooves in his rotors. At least your kitchen won't be humming like a dying fridge at 3 AM.

Pro tip: always ask the contractor what they'd put in their own house.
