Shower niche depth: level with the studs or stick out an inch? My contractor and I went back and forth for a week after a visit to a tile showroom in Portland.

@ivan_harris nailed it. Flat's always better, like how a flush door beats a sticking cabinet every time.

You keep saying "simple and flat" like it's some kind of law. Honestly, a little bit of a lip or edge can stop water from running down the front of the cabinet. I've seen flat panels get stained and warped way faster than ones with a slight overhang. "Collect soap" sounds like you're talking about a shower caddy, not a cabinet door. Maybe you just haven't dealt with a cheap flat door that swells at the bottom. It's not that deep either way, just pick what looks good to you.

Level it with the studs. Anything sticking out is just gonna collect soap and look bulky later. Keep it simple and flat.
