Thermostatic valve was a waste of money, until I tried one at a hotel

I spent $340 on a thermostatic mixing valve for my shower redo in Austin, thought it was pure hype. Then I stayed at a hotel downtown where the water never fluctuated when someone flushed, and now mine feels like a bargain. The constant temp is great, but what really sold me was not getting scalded when my roommate runs the washing machine. Anyone else have a fixture they hated until they used it somewhere else?

Is it just me who ends up appreciating things more when I see them working right in a hotel first?
