Spent $80 on a 'magic' rub that basically tasted like salt and pepper
Saw this fancy rub online from a competition team, promised 'award-winning flavor' and all that. Bought a big tub for $80 plus shipping, used it on a full brisket for a family cookout. It was just coarse salt, black pepper, and maybe a tiny bit of garlic powder (nothing special). The brisket was fine, but I could have made the same rub myself for about $3. Anyone have a go-to rub recipe that's actually worth the hype?

My grandpa's secret rub was just Lawry's seasoned salt, honestly.

Ugh, I read a whole blog post about those overpriced "secret" rubs being exactly that.

Ever feel like the secret ingredient is just being gullible? I once bought a "proprietary blend" that was clearly just paprika with a fancy label. My own spice cabinet has pulled more successful cons.
