Burned $250 on a 'prepper' food bucket that expired before I ever opened it

Picked up a 1-year emergency food kit from a survival expo back in 2020. Figured it was a smart bet since everyone was panic buying. Stuck it in the garage and forgot about it until last week. Opened it up and the pouches were all stale and the seal had split on three of them. Anyone else have luck with those long-term storage meals or is it all just marketing hype?

Oh man, that's a rough $250 mistake (ouch). I bought one of those same buckets back in 2021 and mine is just sitting in the basement collecting dust now. You'd think they'd hold up better than that, especially with the fancy "25 year shelf life" claims they slap on the packaging. The seal splitting after just a few years is a real bummer, makes you wonder if any of them actually last as long as they say. I remember checking the reviews on mine and the company said storing them in a hot garage can wreck the pouches way faster than normal. Solidarity though, it's maddening to throw that kind of cash at something you trusted to have your back in an emergency.

I get where you're coming from with the "fancy claims" stuff, but I actually think the heat damage thing is a bigger factor than people want to admit. The company isn't wrong about the garage issue, my neighbor had a bucket in his shed that got cooked in the summer and the pouches swelled up after like two years. Room temperature basement storage seems to make a real difference with these things, not ideal if you don't have the space though. I'm not saying the seal splitting is fine, that's definitely a quality control problem for sure. Just feels like we set these buckets up to fail sometimes with where we stash them.
