Fell for that $40 'self watering' pot system on Amazon and killed 3 succulents in 2 weeks

The thing had a wicking rope that just kept the soil totally soaked. Looked slick online but my snake plant basically rotted from the bottom up. Anyone else ditch those fancy pots and just go back to regular terracotta?

Three snake plants died before I went back to plain terracotta and never looked back.

Ha! I was totally with the glazed pot crowd for years too, @alicer53. Thought terracotta was boring and basic, but you're making me reconsider hard right now. I lost two peace lilies to root rot in those fancy pots, and I never connected the dots until reading this. Might have to grab some plain terracotta this weekend and give it another shot.

...and honestly, I think those self watering systems work better in theory than they do on my kitchen windowsill. I picked up one of those pretty ceramic jobs with the little water reservoir last spring and my jade plant looked great for about a month before it just went mushy. Took me forever to figure out it was the constant moisture at the bottom that did it, not me overwatering. Now I've got a whole shelf of mismatched terracotta pots I found at garage sales for like a dollar each and everything's doing way better.
