Had to choose between a portable generator and a whole-home backup last spring in Florida
I went with the portable one for a third of the cost, then Hurricane Helene hit and I spent 12 hours in the rain running extension cords to the fridge and sump pump while my neighbor with a whole-home setup just watched TV inside has anyone else regretted that trade-off when the storm actually came?

Got that portable generator during a storm and felt like a fool dodging rain to keep my freezer running while my buddy with the whole home system was binge watching Netflix. Never again, I'm saving up for the full setup before next season hits.

Oh come on @walker.julia, a portable generator isn't that bad if you just run a heavy extension cord through a window crack for your fridge and charge your phone. A whole home system costs thousands more and is overkill if you only lose power once a year.

A heavy extension cord through a window crack is asking for trouble - one good rain and you are risking a short or worse. I've done the portable generator dance and learned the hard way that a simple transfer switch from the hardware store lets you safely power a few circuits without any windows open. Have you looked into just getting a manual transfer switch installed for a few hundred bucks?
