That old post about the Dollar Tree baking soda trick for laundry actually worked.
I saw this random comment on a cleaning forum 2 years ago where someone said they stopped buying expensive laundry boosters and just dumped a box of Dollar Tree baking soda in with their detergent. I rolled my eyes at first because I thought it was just a waste of time. But last month I was broke waiting for my next paycheck and tried it out of desperation. I used half a box in a load of my workout clothes that always smelled funky even after washing. The smell was actually gone afterwards and my clothes felt softer too. I've been doing it for 3 weeks now and it costs me $1.25 per box versus the $12 I was spending on name brand stuff. Has anyone else tried this or am I the only one who slept on it this long?

Yeah "out of desperation" really hits home, that's exactly how I got into it too. I was in the same boat, staring at a half-empty box of store brand baking soda and figured I had nothing to lose. What got me was how it actually got rid of the sweat smell in my gym stuff better than the expensive detergent did. I started adding it to every load, not just the stinky ones, and my towels are way fluffier now. The cheap price tag makes it even better, like who knew the secret to clean clothes was sitting in the baking aisle this whole time. Have you noticed any buildup issues after using it for a while?

Gave up on fabric softener completely once I realized that was probably what was causing the buildup in the first place. Baking soda works way better and my washing machine actually smells clean now instead of like a science experiment.

alice928, that "science experiment" line got me good because that's exactly what my machine smelled like before I quit softener too. I switched to vinegar and baking soda like six months ago and honestly it's working so well that I'm a little embarrassed I didn't try it sooner. My gym shirts don't have that weird sour smell anymore, and I haven't seen any gunk on the rubber seal since, which is a win in my book. Do you do half a cup or just eyeball it like I do?
