That time I laughed off a Reddit post about 'microfiber pollution' and now I'm sorting laundry by fabric type

Saw someone ranting 2 years ago about how washing synthetic jackets dumps plastic into the ocean and I rolled my eyes so hard. Then I bought a Guppyfriend bag last month and pulled out a handful of fuzz after one wash. Has anyone else ignored a warning that turned out to be way bigger than you thought?

Read this thing online about how polyester fleece sheds more than regular polyester. Didn't think much of it until I washed my old Patagonia jacket and the water looked like a glitter factory exploded. So yeah, the Guppyfriend bag thing is real. Pulled out that fuzz and just stared at it for a minute. Felt stupid for laughing at those posts back then. Now I have a separate load just for synthetics and run it on a cold cycle to cut down on shedding. Still using that bag too.

Yeah, "glitter factory exploded" is a good description but it's actually microfibers not microplastics.

Grab a lint roller next time you're near a load of synthetic laundry, you'll be shocked how much fiber comes off even with the bag. Nobody talks about how our dryers are basically fiber-launching cannons (especially with those vented ones) unless you're using a filter like the Filtrol or an external lint trap.
