Used to save every 'this will be huge' post I saw, then I went back and checked 40 of them from 2019
I'd been treating my bookmarks folder like a news tip jar for years, until one night in March I actually opened it and found that out of 40 links I'd saved with a note like 'watch this one,' only 2 turned into anything close to what the poster predicted, and the file on the Hillsborough Facebook group posts I grabbed three weeks before that local story went national had every detail right while the ones I was proudest of saving turned out to be junk, so now I copy the timestamp and screenshot first thing because a link can just vanish, and I'm curious if other folks here have a hit rate on their old saves or if it's mostly misses like mine.
My grandma did the same thing with newspaper clippings! She kept this huge stack of articles about local kids who were gonna be famous someday, and when she passed we went through them, and almost none of those kids ever made it big. But she also had one tiny clipping from 1974 about a neighbor opening a little ice cream shop, and that place is still running today with the same family. The flashy stuff faded and the quiet stuff lasted, which kind of lines up with what you found with those Facebook posts. I still have her clipping about the ice cream place taped in my kitchen, and it reminds me that the stuff people shout about is not always the stuff that sticks. Saving the timestamp and screenshot idea is smart though, because those old links rot fast and then you have nothing to look back at.
