Found a stat on food waste that made me rethink my grocery budget

I read that the average American family throws away $1,500 worth of food per year (from a USDA report I stumbled on). Does that sound accurate to anyone else's experience, or do you think the number is overblown?

Whoa, that number feels about right from my own kitchen habits. I track my grocery spending pretty close and easily toss $20-30 of produce and leftovers each week. Your mileage may vary depending on how good your meal planning game is.

And @stella_scott96 is spot on. I was just doing the math in my head the other day after clearing out my fridge. I swore I was gonna use that sad bag of spinach for something but it ended up as science experiment number three. Meal planning is a joke here, I just buy what looks good and hope for the best.
