The local weather app called a 40% rain chance wrong, now I check radar maps myself

I used to trust the weather app on my phone for everything, especially before my commute across Portland. Three weeks ago it said 40% chance of rain and I skipped my umbrella, then got soaked walking from the MAX station to work. That same app predicted a sunny Saturday for my niece's outdoor graduation, and it poured for two hours straight. I started cross-checking with the National Weather Service radar loops and noticed the app was pulling from a model that lagged by about 45 minutes. Now I only use the app for temperature, and I rely on live radar for anything more than an hour out. Has anyone else found a better free radar source for the Pacific Northwest, or is it just about checking the NWS site directly?
