The real story behind the power grid failure in Portland last winter

Everyone saw the headlines about the ice storm causing blackouts, but the full story is way more about old infrastructure and poor planning. The city's main substation near the river hadn't had a major upgrade since the 80s, and a single failed transformer took down power for 15,000 homes. I was stuck without heat for four days and had to crash with a friend. Has anyone else dug into why these systems are so fragile?

Yeah, after that freeze we finally got a small generator. It just runs the fridge and a space heater, made a huge difference.

Running a space heater on a small generator is risky. They draw a lot of power and can overload the system. It's better to stick with the fridge and maybe some lights.

My buddy tried that exact setup last winter. His generator just shut down with a loud pop after ten minutes. Fried the circuit board in the heater too. Had to wait days for a replacement in the cold. Really not worth the risk on a small unit.
