TIL the local news story about a "rent strike" at my old complex was really about one broken boiler and a guy named Daryl
I live two blocks from the Maplewood Arms in Toledo where that rent strike made the evening news last month, and 14 tenants were on camera talking about a landlord conspiracy. My old neighbor still lives there so I called her, and she said it was really one busted boiler in Building C that took 9 days to fix because the part came from overseas. The guy leading the strike, Daryl, had his rent raised $75 in March and just got loud about it, which I get, but the "organized tenants union" was like 6 people and a group chat. The station ran with it because a reporter saw a handwritten sign in a window, and nobody called the property manager back before air time. I worked maintenance for 5 years so I know how boring the real story usually is, a part on backorder and a guy who is already mad. Anyone else ever find out a big local story was way smaller than it looked on TV?
Meanwhile my big claim to local fame is knowing a guy who once got his truck stuck in the same ditch twice in one week, so I probably shouldn't throw stones at Daryl. The part about the boiler is what gets me though, 9 days for an overseas part is just normal life in maintenance and somehow that turned into a tenant uprising. Six people and a group chat is not a union, that's a fantasy football league that hates the commissioner.
