I finally stopped pretending to love Kurt Cobain just to fit in with music snobs

Back in 2011, I was at a house party in Portland and this guy spent 45 minutes going on about how Nirvana changed music forever. I nodded along but honestly, I never got the hype. I tried listening to Nevermind three times that week and it just felt like loud noise to me. What tipped me off was when I realized I was forcing myself to like something just so people wouldn't judge my taste. Has anyone else faked liking a dead celebrity just because everyone else does?

Had a buddy in high school who swore The Beatles changed his life. Sat through a whole afternoon of him playing Revolver on repeat. Next day I told him I finally got it. Still can't name one song off that album.

Did you actually sit down with the lyrics or just the hype? I used to fake liking Radiohead in college because my roommate worshipped them, but then one night I actually read the lines on OK Computer and it finally clicked. Maybe give Kurt's unplugged set a shot, that's where I found the emotion people talk about. If it still doesn't hit you, no shame in moving on, life's too short to force yourself into a music box that doesn't fit.

@quinnm77 you're spot on. I remember forcing myself to like The Smiths before I finally got it driving home at 3am.
